BMW Brake Repair Completed at Our Walsall Garage
A BMW came into us here in Walsall recently with a familiar set of complaints. The owner had noticed the stopping distance felt longer than it used to, there was a low grinding noise when braking at low speed, and the brake pedal needed more travel before it started to bite. Any one of those things on its own is worth getting checked. All three together told us the brakes needed attention before the car went anywhere near a motorway or a fast road.
The Brake Pads Were Worn Down Close to the Metal Backing Plate
With the wheels off we could measure exactly what we were dealing with. The front brake pads had worn down to around 2mm on one side and just under 3mm on the other. The minimum safe thickness for a brake pad is generally accepted as 3mm, and at 2mm you are already below that. The friction material, which is the part of the pad that actually does the stopping work, was nearly gone. What sits beneath it is a hard metal backing plate, and once that starts making contact with the disc, the disc surface gets scored and grooved. At that point you are not just replacing pads, you are replacing discs as well, which adds a significant cost to what would otherwise have been a straightforward repair. We also checked the rear pads, which had more material left but were being logged for monitoring.
Worn Pads at This Level Are a Genuine Safety Risk, Not Just a Wear Item
It is worth being clear about what reduced braking performance actually means in practice. If you are travelling at 60mph and you need to stop in an emergency, a car with pads this worn will take noticeably longer to come to a halt than a car with pads in good condition. That difference in stopping distance can be measured in metres, and on a busy road or in wet conditions, those extra metres matter. The grinding noise the owner was hearing was metal beginning to contact metal. Left another few hundred miles, the discs would have been damaged beyond resurfacing, and the braking force would have continued to drop. We also inspected the brake fluid while the car was with us. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause the brakes to feel spongy under hard use. The fluid on this car was overdue a change and we recommended it be done alongside the pad replacement.
New Pads Fitted, Discs Checked and the Car Road Tested Before It Left Us
We fitted new brake pads to both front corners using parts that meet the manufacturer's specification for this BMW. Before reassembling, we checked the disc thickness with a micrometer, which measures the disc down to fractions of a millimetre, to confirm they were still within the tolerance BMW sets for safe use. They were, so we did not need to replace them, which saved the owner money. We also cleaned and lubricated the caliper slide pins, which are the components that allow the brake caliper to move freely as the pads press against the disc. Seized slide pins cause uneven pad wear and are a common reason one pad wears faster than the other, which is exactly what we saw on this car. Once everything was reassembled, we took the BMW out for a road test to confirm the braking felt progressive, the pedal travel had returned to normal and there was no noise from either corner.
