2015 Mazda 3 Pollen Filter Replaced for the First Time in Walsall
We had a 2015 Mazda 3 come into us recently here in Walsall for a service. The car was ten years old and in reasonable shape overall, but when we got into the service items and pulled the pollen filter, it was clear it had never been replaced in the car's entire lifetime. Ten years of driving, ten years of dust, pollen, road debris and general road air passing through the same filter, and nothing had ever been swapped out. It was long overdue.
A Ten Year Old Filter Loaded with Debris and Completely Blocked
The pollen filter sits inside the ventilation system, usually behind the glovebox or under the dashboard depending on the model. Its job is simple, it catches airborne particles before they get pushed into the cabin through your vents. That means pollen, dust, road grime, insects and anything else floating around outside the car. On a healthy filter you would expect to see some build up, that is what it is there for. On this Mazda 3 the filter was dark grey throughout, heavily compacted and well past the point where it could do its job properly. Manufacturers typically recommend replacing the pollen filter every 12 to 15 months or around every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. This one had accumulated ten years of use without a single change.
A Blocked Pollen Filter Restricts Airflow and Pushes Contaminated Air into the Cabin
When a pollen filter is this far gone, two things start to happen. First, the airflow through your vents drops off noticeably because the fan has to push air through a compacted block of debris rather than a clean filter. You may have noticed your air conditioning or heating feels weaker than it used to, or that the fan has to run on a higher setting to get any real movement of air through the car. That extra strain on the fan motor over time can shorten its working life, and a fan motor replacement is a significantly more expensive job than a filter. Second, and more importantly, a saturated filter can start to harbour mould and bacteria. At that point the system is no longer filtering the air coming into the car, it is adding to what you are breathing in on every journey. For anyone with allergies, asthma or young children in the car, that is not a situation you want to leave running.
New Filter Fitted and Ventilation System Checked Before the Car Left Us
We removed the old filter and fitted a new one to the correct specification for the Mazda 3. We also checked the housing and the surrounding ducting to make sure no debris had worked its way past the old filter into the system itself. The difference in airflow through the vents after the new filter was in place was noticeable straight away. The car went back to the owner with the ventilation system doing what it should be doing.
