How Electric Cars Actually Work

A petrol or diesel engine burns fuel to create thousands of tiny controlled explosions a second, and that energy gets converted, through pistons, a crankshaft, a gearbox and a clutch, into motion at the wheels. An electric car skips almost all of that. A large battery pack stores energy, and an electric motor converts that stored energy directly into motion, with none of the intermediate mechanical steps a combustion engine needs. Most electric cars use a single fixed gear rather than a multi speed gearbox, since an electric motor produces its full pulling power from a standstill and doesn't need different gear ratios to stay in its efficient range the way a petrol engine does. When you lift off the accelerator or brake, the motor runs in reverse and acts as a generator, feeding energy back into the battery rather than losing it all as heat, a process called regenerative braking.

What Makes Them Different to Service

Because there is no combustion engine, a lot of what a traditional service covers simply doesn't apply. There is no engine oil to change, no oil filter, no spark plugs, no timing belt or chain, and no exhaust or DPF to worry about. Electric cars still need attention though, just in different places. The 12 volt battery that runs the lights, infotainment and door locks still needs checking, brake fluid still absorbs moisture and needs changing on schedule, and the coolant system that keeps the battery and motor at the right temperature needs its own inspection, since electric drivetrains can be damaged by overheating just as easily as a petrol engine can. Brake pads and discs usually last considerably longer on an electric car, because regenerative braking does most of the slowing down in everyday driving and the friction brakes are used far less. Tyres tend to wear faster instead, since electric cars are heavier than their petrol equivalents and deliver all their power instantly from a standstill.

High Voltage Safety, and Why Certification Matters

Not every part of an electric car needs specialist equipment. Tyres, suspension, the 12 volt battery, wiper blades, cabin filters and general bodywork can all be looked after by any competent garage in exactly the same way as a petrol or diesel car. The high voltage battery and power system are a different matter entirely, these carry several hundred volts and require manufacturer specific training, insulated tools and safety procedures to work on safely. That distinction matters when you're choosing where to take an electric car, since a garage without that certification simply isn't equipped to touch the battery or motor, even if they can happily do your tyres and brakes. How an Electric Car Can Save You Money

Electric cars tend to cost less to service day to day simply because there's less to go wrong. No oil changes, no timing belt replacement, no clutch to wear on most models, and far fewer fluids overall all add up to a service bill that's typically lower than the equivalent petrol or diesel car service. Brake pad life is one of the more noticeable savings, since regenerative braking means the friction brakes do less work and often last two to three times longer between replacements. Running costs tend to be lower too, charging overnight at home is generally cheaper per mile than filling up with petrol or diesel, particularly on an off peak electricity tariff. The main thing worth budgeting for on an older electric car is battery health, which is exactly why we check it as part of every service rather than waiting for a problem to show up on the road.
