Your manufacturer warranty stays valid as long as the car is serviced on schedule using parts that meet Toyota's specification, which is what we use. The one exception is Toyota Relax and Lexus Relax. That extended cover only continues if the car is serviced at an approved Toyota or Lexus centre, so if you rely on it, we will tell you honestly before you book.

Not always. A hybrid battery is made up of individual modules, and often only one or two have weakened. We test the battery to find the faulty modules and, where it makes sense, replace those rather than the whole pack, which costs far less. We also check the battery cooling fan and its air intake, because a blocked intake makes the battery run hot and wear out early.

On hybrids, the most common is a flat 12 volt battery, which stops the car starting even though the hybrid battery is fine. We also see blocked battery cooling vents, inverter coolant pump failures on the third generation Prius, and brake discs and calipers seizing from lack of use. On the D-4D diesels, EGR valve clogging and injector problems come up regularly. We always confirm the cause with a diagnostic check before quoting for any repair.

On a hybrid, the electric motor does most of the slowing down, so the pads and discs do very little work. That sounds like a good thing, but brakes that are rarely used tend to rust, and the caliper slides can seize, especially on cars that only do short local journeys. We clean and lubricate the slides during servicing and check the discs for corrosion, which can otherwise cause an MOT failure.
