Peugeot Full Service Carried Out at Our Walsall Garage

We had a Peugeot come into us here at Platinum Vehicle Services recently for a full service. The owner had been keeping on top of things reasonably well, but the service interval had come around and they wanted everything checked over properly before the mileage crept any further. This is exactly the kind of job we carry out every week at our garage in Walsall, and it is also one of the most important things you can do to protect the long term health of your car.

The Engine Oil Was Dark and Depleted, Which Means Increased Wear on Every Moving Part

The first thing we check on any service is the engine oil, both the level and the condition. On this Peugeot, the oil had dropped below the minimum marker on the dipstick and had turned very dark, close to black. Fresh engine oil is an amber colour. As it works, it picks up carbon deposits, metal particles and combustion residue. Once it reaches that black, thick consistency it is no longer doing its job properly. Engine oil lubricates dozens of moving components inside the engine, including the crankshaft, camshaft and piston rings. When the oil is degraded, those parts are running with less protection than they need. Over time that causes wear, and worn engine internals are not a cheap fix. We drained the old oil completely, replaced the oil filter, and filled the engine with fresh oil to the correct level. That alone makes a measurable difference to how the engine runs.

The Air Filter Was Blocked Enough to Affect Fuel Economy and Engine Performance

We removed the air filter as part of the service inspection. The air filter sits in a housing in the engine bay and its job is to stop dust, dirt and debris from entering the engine with the air it draws in to combust fuel. On this Peugeot, the filter was heavily clogged. A blocked air filter restricts the airflow going into the engine, which forces it to work harder to pull in what it needs. The result is reduced performance and noticeably worse fuel economy. In some cases a severely restricted filter can also cause the engine to run rich, meaning it burns more fuel than it should for the power it produces. We fitted a new filter, which restores the correct airflow and lets the engine breathe properly again. It is a simple component, but leaving a blocked one in place costs you money in fuel every time you drive.

We Checked All Fluid Levels, Inspected the Brakes and Confirmed the Car Was Safe to Drive Away

Beyond the oil and air filter, a full service covers a wide range of checks. We topped up the coolant, which keeps the engine from overheating, and checked the brake fluid level and condition. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. If the fluid gets too contaminated it can become less effective under heavy braking, which is a safety concern rather than just a maintenance one. We also inspected the brake pads on all four corners. On this Peugeot they had usable material remaining, so no replacement was needed at this visit, but we noted the measurements so the owner knows what to watch for next time. We checked the tyres for pressure and tread depth, looked over the suspension components for any signs of wear, and carried out a full visual inspection underneath the car. Once everything was completed we road tested the vehicle before handing it back.
