Audi A1 Oil Change and Pollen Filter Replacement in Walsall
We had an Audi A1 come into us recently for a routine service. The owner knew it was due but had been putting it off, which is something we see regularly. The two jobs on this visit were an oil change and a pollen filter replacement. Neither job takes long, but both matter more than most people realise, and this visit is a good example of why keeping on top of the basics saves you money further down the line.
The Engine Oil Was Overdue and Had Started to Degrade
When we drained the oil from this A1, it had gone well past the point where it was doing its best work. Fresh engine oil is a light amber colour and flows freely. What came out of this car was dark, thick and carrying a noticeable amount of contaminants. Engine oil does two main jobs, it lubricates the moving parts inside the engine so they do not grind against each other, and it carries heat and debris away from those parts. As oil ages and heats up through normal driving, it breaks down. The additives that protect your engine wear out, and the oil thickens as it collects tiny particles of metal and carbon from combustion. Once it reaches that state it is no longer protecting your engine the way it should.
Left too long, degraded oil causes increased wear on components like the crankshaft bearings and camshaft, parts that are expensive to repair or replace. A full engine rebuild on a car like this could run into several thousand pounds. A regular oil change costs a fraction of that and prevents the problem from developing in the first place. On the Audi A1 we also replaced the oil filter at the same time, which is standard practice. The filter traps contaminants, and if you put fresh oil in without changing the filter, the new oil passes straight through the old debris sitting in it.
The Pollen Filter Was Blocked and Restricting Airflow Into the Cabin
The pollen filter, sometimes called a cabin air filter, sits in the ventilation system and cleans the air before it comes through your vents. It catches dust, pollen, pollution particles and other debris from the road environment. On this A1 the filter was heavily clogged. A clean filter allows air to pass through freely. This one was doing the opposite, it was acting more like a partial blockage than a filter.
When the pollen filter is blocked, a few things happen. First, the air coming into the cabin is reduced, so your heating and air conditioning feels weaker than it should even when turned up fully. Second, the blower motor, which is the fan that pushes air through the system, has to work harder to pull air through the restriction. Running a motor under that kind of strain for an extended period shortens its life. Blower motor replacement is not a catastrophic repair, but it is an avoidable one. Third, a blocked filter means more unfiltered air finds its way around the system, which affects the air quality inside the car and can make the windscreen harder to demist in winter because the system cannot move enough dry air across the glass quickly enough.
We Fitted Fresh Oil and a New Filter, and the Car Left in the Condition It Should Be In
We drained the old oil completely, fitted a new oil filter, and refilled the engine with fresh oil to the correct specification for the A1. We also fitted a new pollen filter, which took the airflow through the ventilation system back to where it should be. Both jobs were completed in a single visit and the car left running as it should.
These are the kinds of jobs that are easy to defer because nothing feels dramatically wrong from the driver's seat, at least not at first. But the signs are there if you know what to look for. If your heating or air conditioning feels weaker than it used to, or if your windscreen is taking longer than normal to clear in the morning, your pollen filter is worth checking. If your car has covered more miles than the manufacturer recommends between oil changes, or if you cannot remember the last time the oil was changed, that is enough reason to book it in.
