Audi Q3 Suspension Repair in Walsall

An Audi Q3 came into us here at Platinum Vehicle Services with the owner reporting that the car felt loose over uneven road surfaces, was producing a knocking sound when going over bumps, and seemed to pull slightly to one side when driving. These are all signs that something in the suspension needs attention, and this job turned out to be a clear example of why it pays to get those symptoms checked early rather than leaving them to develop.

The Suspension Was Worn Beyond Safe Limits and the Car Was No Longer Tracking Correctly

Once we had the car up on the ramp and the wheel off, we could get a proper look at what was going on. The lower arm bush, which is a rubber and metal sleeve that holds the suspension arm in position and absorbs road shock, had deteriorated significantly. The rubber had broken down to the point where there was visible movement in the joint that should not be there. We measured around 8mm of play in the component, where there should be virtually none. A bush in that condition cannot hold the suspension arm in the correct position, which means the wheel is no longer sitting at the right angle relative to the road.

We also found wear in the track rod end on the same corner. The track rod end is the component that connects your steering rack to the wheel, and it is what allows the wheel to turn left and right when you move the steering wheel. When this component wears, the wheel can move independently of your steering input by a small but significant amount. On this car there was around 4 to 5mm of unwanted movement at the wheel when we checked it by hand, which is enough to affect how the car responds when you need to steer quickly or safely.

Leaving This Any Longer Would Have Pulled More Components Into the Problem

Suspension wear does not stay contained to the part that is already failing. When a lower arm bush is as far gone as this one was, the wheel sits at a slight angle that causes uneven tyre wear. On the Q3 we could already see the inside edge of the front tyre on that corner beginning to scrub, which is a sign the alignment had been out for some time. Left another few thousand miles, you are looking at replacing a tyre that still had usable tread across most of its width, simply because one edge has been ground away by incorrect geometry. That is an unnecessary extra cost on top of the suspension repair itself.

The worn track rod end carried a more immediate risk. Excessive play in the steering linkage means the car's response to steering inputs becomes slightly delayed and imprecise, particularly at higher speeds or in an emergency stop and steer situation. It is the kind of fault that can feel manageable on an empty road but becomes dangerous when you need the car to respond instantly.

We Replaced the Worn Components, Reset the Geometry and Road Tested Before Returning the Car

We fitted a new lower arm bush and a new track rod end on the affected corner, using parts that meet the original manufacturer specification for the Q3. Once the new components were in and torqued to the correct settings, we put the car on our alignment equipment to bring the wheel geometry back within tolerance. With worn suspension components like these, the alignment will almost always need resetting afterwards because the old parts will have been holding the geometry in the wrong position for some time. We then road tested the car to confirm the knock had gone, the steering was tracking straight and the car felt settled over uneven surfaces before we handed it back.

If Your Car Knocks, Pulls or Feels Vague Over Bumps, Book It in With Us in Walsall

Suspension faults are one of the most common reasons cars come into our garage here in Walsall, and we see them across all makes including Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen and Ford as well as Audi. The signs to watch for on your own car are a knocking or clunking noise when you go over a speed bump or pothole, the car pulling to one side without you steering that way, the steering feeling slightly vague or slow to respond, or uneven wear appearing on one edge of a tyre. Any of those symptoms is worth having looked at before the fault spreads to surrounding components and the repair bill grows with it.

We serve customers across Walsall, Bloxwich, Aldridge, Willenhall and Brownhills, and we keep our pricing clear and our explanations plain so you always know exactly what we are doing and why before we start any work.
