Audi A1 Full Service and Misfire Investigation in Walsall
We had an Audi A1 come into us recently for a full service, but the owner had also noticed the engine felt rough and uneven at times, particularly at lower revs. That kind of symptom is nearly always a misfire, which means one or more of the engine's cylinders is not igniting the fuel and air mixture properly. It is one of those faults that drivers sometimes put off because the car still moves, but leaving it is a mistake that tends to cost more the longer it sits.
The Diagnostic Scan Pointed Straight to Cylinder Three and Worn Spark Plugs
The first thing we did was connect the car to our diagnostic equipment. This plugs into a port built into every modern vehicle and reads fault codes stored by the engine management system. The system logs exactly which cylinder is causing the problem, so rather than guessing, we know immediately where to look. The scan returned a misfire fault on cylinder three, which on this engine sits in the middle of the four cylinder block.
We pulled the spark plugs out and inspected them. A healthy spark plug has a clean electrode with a tight, consistent gap, typically around 0.7mm to 1.0mm on most modern petrol engines. The plug from cylinder three had a worn, rounded electrode and the gap had opened up noticeably beyond its specified tolerance. When the gap is too wide, the ignition system has to work harder to bridge it, and at lower revs or under light load it sometimes cannot fire reliably at all. The remaining plugs were also well past their best, with deposits and wear that suggested they had not been changed in some time. On a full service we replace all four as a matter of course.
A Misfiring Cylinder Puts Real Strain on the Catalytic Converter and the Engine
It is worth explaining what actually happens inside the engine when a cylinder misfires. Unburned fuel passes through the exhaust and into the catalytic converter, which is the component that cleans the exhaust gases before they leave the car. The catalytic converter operates at very high temperatures, and when raw fuel hits it repeatedly it overheats internally. Over time the ceramic core inside it can crack or melt. A replacement catalytic converter on an Audi A1 can run to several hundred pounds depending on specification, so what starts as a spark plug job can become a significantly bigger bill if it is ignored long enough. Beyond the cost, a persistent misfire means the engine is running inefficiently, fuel economy drops noticeably, and the rough running puts additional strain on other engine components.
We Replaced All Four Spark Plugs, Completed the Full Service and Road Tested the Car
We fitted a fresh set of spark plugs to the correct gap specification for this engine, cleared the fault codes, and carried out the full service alongside the misfire repair. The service included an oil and filter change, air filter replacement, cabin filter replacement, and a check of all fluid levels including coolant, brake fluid and screenwash. We inspected the brakes, tyres and suspension components while the car was with us and reported the condition of each to the owner with honest figures, not just a pass or fail. After everything was complete we took the car out for a road test to confirm the engine was running cleanly through the rev range before handing it back.

A misfire does not always trigger a warning light straight away, particularly in the early stages. What you are more likely to notice first is the engine feeling rough or lumpy at idle, a slight judder when pulling away, a drop in fuel economy, or a faint smell of fuel from the exhaust. If any of those sound familiar, the sooner you get it looked at the better. Spark plugs are a relatively low cost item when addressed early. The components they protect, the catalytic converter in particular, are not.
