Vauxhall Combo Brake Repair at Our Walsall Workshop

A Vauxhall Combo came into us at our Walsall workshop with a brake issue that needed attention before the vehicle went back into regular use. The owner had noticed the brakes were not performing as they should, and that is exactly the kind of thing we want to look at before it becomes something more serious. With the wheel off and a clear view of the whole brake assembly, we could carry out a proper inspection and work out exactly what was needed before any parts were ordered or touched.

The Brake Pads Had Worn Down Further Than They Should Have Been Left

With the wheel removed we had a full view of the caliper, pads and disc. The pads had worn to a point where there was very little friction material left. Brake pads start life with around 10 to 12mm of material. By the time they are down to 3mm or below, stopping distances begin to increase noticeably, and the pad is not far off the metal backing plate behind it. At that stage the braking performance is reduced at the exact moments you need it most, under hard or emergency braking.

We also checked the brake caliper, which is the hydraulic clamp that squeezes the pads against the disc when you press the pedal. On this vehicle we found the caliper was not releasing cleanly after each brake application, which is a common cause of uneven pad wear and can result in the pads dragging against the disc even when you are not braking. Left alone that creates heat, accelerates wear on both the pads and the disc, and eventually causes the disc to warp or score. A warped disc means you pay for the disc as well as the pads, and a stuck caliper can cause the wheel to run hot in a way that creates a genuine safety risk.

We Replaced the Pads and Freed Off the Caliper Before Road Testing the Vehicle

We fitted new brake pads to the affected corner, cleaned and freed off the caliper so it was moving and releasing as it should, and checked the disc surface for scoring or lip wear. The disc was still within the minimum thickness tolerance set by the manufacturer so it did not need replacing at this stage, which saved the owner an unnecessary cost. Once everything was back together we road tested the vehicle to confirm the pedal feel was firm and consistent and that the brakes were pulling evenly without any judder or pull to one side.

Brakes are one of those systems where leaving a problem rarely saves you money and can cost you much more than the original repair, in parts, in time off the road and in risk. We carry out brake inspections, pad and disc replacements, caliper work and full brake system checks across all vehicle types at our Walsall garage. If your brakes feel soft when you press the pedal, if the vehicle pulls to one side under braking, if you hear a grinding or squealing noise when you slow down, or if the brake warning light has appeared on your dashboard, do not wait to see if it resolves itself. Get it looked at. You can book your vehicle in with us at platinumvehicleservices.co.uk.
