Nissan Micra AC Regas: Why a Completely Empty Refrigerant System Left This Car Blowing Warm Air
A bright blue Nissan Micra came in with one complaint. The air conditioning was blowing nothing but warm air. The driver had noticed it getting progressively worse and decided to get it looked at before the warmer months arrived. It is a common enough problem and one we deal with regularly, but what the machine showed us when we connected it told us more than just a simple low charge situation.
Zero Grams Recovered When We Connected the Machine, Meaning the System Was Completely Empty With Nothing Left in It at All
When we hooked the car up to our Pro AC regas machine using the red and blue service hoses the first reading on the display was zero grams of recovered refrigerant. That told us straight away the system was completely empty. There was nothing left in there at all. A system running with no refrigerant cannot produce cold air no matter how the car's controls are set. The machine then ran a 25 minute vacuum on the system to clear it out and check it was holding before we moved on to the recharge stage.
Running an AC Compressor With No Refrigerant and No Lubrication Causes Internal Wear That Can Turn a Simple Regas Into a Compressor Replacement
Air conditioning systems are not fully sealed in the way most people assume. Over time small amounts of refrigerant escape through microscopic permeation in the hoses and seals. This is gradual and entirely normal, which is why most manufacturers recommend a regas every two to three years. However if the system has been left without attention for long enough, or if there is a more significant leak somewhere, the charge level can drop all the way to nothing as it had on this Micra. Running an AC compressor with no refrigerant means no lubrication for the internal components. Left long enough that wear can turn a simple regas job into a much more expensive compressor replacement. Getting it sorted early is always the better option.
450g of Refrigerant and 5ml of PAG Oil Charged Into the System, UV Dye Added So Any Future Leak Can Be Traced Quickly Under UV Light
Once the vacuum stage was complete and we were satisfied the system was holding we charged it with 450 grams of refrigerant along with 5ml of PAG oil to lubricate the compressor correctly. We also introduced UV dye into the system during the process, which allows us to trace any future leaks quickly and accurately under UV light if the customer ever comes back with a recurring problem. Once the charge was complete the difference was immediate. The vents were pushing out cold air exactly as they should be and the customer left with a fully functioning air conditioning system ready for whatever the weather brings.
If your car's air conditioning has been blowing warm air or it is not as cold as it used to be that is usually the first sign the refrigerant level is getting low. You might also notice an unusual smell from the vents or the system struggling to keep the cabin cool even on a mild day. Collapsed Wishbone Bush Found on a Nissan Juke During MOT in Walsall
A Nissan Juke came in recently for its MOT and during the inspection on the pit we spotted something the owner had no idea about. No pulling to one side, no clunking the driver had noticed, nothing obvious from inside the car. But underneath the vehicle the story was a different one entirely. One of the front suspension wishbone bushes had completely collapsed, and it was the kind of fault that needed dealing with before the car went anywhere near the road.
The Bush on One Side Had Collapsed Flat With Metal Running Against Metal, While the Bush on the Other Side Still Showed the Correct Gap and Alignment
When we looked at the front suspension over the pit one of the wishbone bushes was visibly compressed flat. A wishbone bush is a rubber and metal component that sits within the wishbone arm and cushions the movement between the suspension and the subframe. When it is in good condition you can see a clear gap around the rubber and the whole assembly sits correctly. On this car the bush on one side had collapsed entirely. No gap left at all, the rubber had given way, and the metal was effectively running against metal. We compared it to the bush on the opposite side of the car which still looked as it should, with the proper spacing and alignment visible. The difference was clear and it left no doubt about the diagnosis.
A Collapsed Bush Affects Wheel Alignment, Stability Under Braking, and If Left Long Enough Spreads Damage to the Wishbone Arm and Subframe
Wishbone bushes wear down over time through a combination of age, mileage, and the general punishment that suspension components take from road surfaces. The roads around Walsall and the wider West Midlands are not always kind to suspension, and bushes that have been on a car for several years will eventually reach the point where the rubber breaks down and the component collapses. When that happens the wishbone arm can no longer move as it is supposed to. Wheel alignment is affected, the car becomes less stable under braking and cornering, and the forces that were being absorbed by the bush are now being transferred directly to other components. Left long enough the damage spreads to the wishbone arm itself, the subframe, and surrounding parts, which turns what is already a repair job into a much larger and more expensive one. On an MOT a collapsed wishbone bush is a failure, and rightly so. It is a direct safety concern.
Bush Replaced, Suspension Geometry Checked, MOT Completed and the Car Back on the Road the Same Day
We replaced the collapsed wishbone bush and made sure the suspension geometry was correct once the work was done. Before handing the car back we checked everything over to confirm the repair was solid and the vehicle was safe. The Juke went through its MOT once the fault had been addressed and the owner drove away in a car that was in a safe, roadworthy condition.
If your car has been feeling slightly different through corners, if there is any vagueness in the steering, or if you have noticed any knocking from the front end, those are signs that could point to worn suspension bushes or other related faults. Sometimes, as with this Juke, there are no obvious signs at all, which is exactly why a proper inspection matters. If you are based in Walsall or anywhere across the West Midlands bring it into Platinum Vehicle Services and we will take a proper look.
