A wheel speed sensor is a small component mounted close to the wheel hub, and its job is to send a continuous signal to the ABS control unit telling it exactly how fast each individual wheel is spinning. The control unit compares those four readings many times per second. If one wheel starts to lock up and slow down faster than the others, the system releases and reapplies the brake on that wheel automatically, faster than any driver could manage on their own. Without a reliable signal from that sensor, the ABS unit cannot do its job and shuts the system off as a precaution, which is why the warning light comes on.
A Faulty Sensor Left in Place Means No ABS Protection When You Need It Most
It is worth being clear about what driving without ABS actually means. On a dry road in normal conditions you may not notice anything different. The problem comes in an emergency, on a wet road, loose gravel, or any surface where grip is reduced. Without ABS, if you brake hard the wheels can lock, the tyres stop rotating and the car travels in a straight line regardless of where you turn the steering wheel. You lose the ability to steer around what is in front of you. On a Mercedes CLS, which is a heavier car, the stopping distances involved when wheels lock up are significant. We removed the front nearside wheel to gain proper access to the hub area where the sensor sits. The sensor itself is held in place by a single bolt and connects to the car's wiring loom via a plug. We fitted a new sensor, reconnected the wiring, and then cleared the stored fault codes using the diagnostic equipment. After clearing the codes we carried out a road test, paying attention to whether the warning light returned and checking that the ABS system was registering clean, consistent speed readings from all four corners of the car. The light stayed off and the system was reading correctly across all four sensors. The car went back to the owner the same day, ready for that motorway journey.
