BMW 3 Series Shock Absorber Failure Diagnosed and Repaired in Walsall

A BMW 3 Series came into us here at Platinum Vehicle Services with a concern about the way it was riding and handling. The owner had noticed the car felt unsettled over bumps and was not sitting as confidently through corners as it should. Once we got it up on the ramp, it did not take long to find the cause.

The Shock Absorber Failed the Compression Test on the Spot

The first thing we do when suspension is in question is a basic but reliable check. We compress the strut rod by hand and watch what happens when we let go. On a shock absorber that is working correctly, the rod springs back firmly and without hesitation. On this BMW, it did not. The rod moved slowly and weakly, and you can see exactly that in the video below. That response tells us the damper inside the unit has failed.

The damper is the part that controls how quickly the suspension moves up and down. It is filled with hydraulic fluid, and when the piston moves through that fluid it creates resistance, which is what keeps the wheel from bouncing freely. When the fluid degrades or the seals fail, that resistance disappears and the suspension loses its ability to control movement.

A Failed Damper Means the Tyre Is Not Staying on the Road Properly

This is not a comfort issue. It is a safety issue. When the damper is no longer controlling the movement of the wheel, the tyre bounces rather than staying in firm contact with the road surface. That matters most when you brake or steer quickly. Braking distances increase because the tyre is not pressing consistently against the tarmac, and the car can pull or feel vague through a corner because the wheel is moving in ways the driver cannot predict or compensate for.

Left in this condition, the problem also gets worse and more expensive over time. A worn damper puts extra stress on the springs, the top mounts and the tyres themselves. Uneven tyre wear is a common result, meaning you end up replacing tyres earlier than you should. It can also knock the wheel geometry out of alignment, which adds further cost further down the line.

We Replaced the Shock Absorber and Checked the Rest of the Corner

We replaced the failed shock absorber unit on the BMW and checked the surrounding components at the same time. That means looking at the spring for any signs of cracking or settling, checking the top mount which sits at the top of the strut and connects it to the car body, and looking over the rest of the suspension geometry. Once everything was in order the car went back out on a road test to confirm the handling felt correct before it went back to the owner.
