Not every MOT is a formality, and this Peugeot that came into us here at Platinum Vehicle Services was a good example of why it pays to have the car looked at properly rather than just waved through. The owner brought it in for its annual MOT test and, on the surface, the car seemed fine to drive. Once we worked through the full checklist, though, it became clear there were a few things that needed sorting before it was going anywhere legally or safely.
The MOT Checklist Flagged Problems the Driver Had Not Noticed on the Road
We work through every item on the official MOT checklist in order, which covers everything from lighting and steering to brakes, tyres, suspension and emissions. On this Peugeot, the brakes were the first thing that gave us concern. The front brake pads had worn down to around 2mm. The legal and safe minimum is 1.5mm, so these were close to the limit, but more importantly, at 2mm there is very little friction material left between the brake and the metal backing plate beneath it. Once that material is gone, it is metal grinding on metal, and at that point the brake disc itself starts to get damaged. A set of brake pads might cost you a reasonable amount to replace. Leave them until the discs are scored and you are looking at replacing the discs as well, which is significantly more expensive. We also found an issue with a rear suspension component, specifically a rear trailing arm bush that had perished and cracked. A bush is a small rubber sleeve that sits inside the suspension joint and absorbs movement and vibration. When it breaks down, the joint becomes loose, which affects how the car handles and how predictably it responds when you steer or brake. This is not something you necessarily feel on a straight, smooth road, but in an emergency stop or a sharp corner it matters considerably.
Leaving Either of These Faults Would Have Made the Car Increasingly Unsafe to Drive
The brake pads alone would have failed the MOT, which means the car could not be driven legally until they were replaced. But beyond the certificate, the real issue is stopping distance. At 2mm of pad thickness, braking performance is already reduced compared to a fresh pad, and once the metal backing contacts the disc the stopping distance increases further and unpredictably. The failed bush adds to that picture. Loose suspension changes how weight transfers through the car when you brake hard. The two faults together meant this Peugeot was genuinely less safe to stop in an emergency than the driver would have assumed. We explained all of this to the owner before any work went ahead, gave them a clear price, and waited for the go-ahead before we started.
New Pads, a Replacement Bush and a Full Retest Before the Car Left Us
We fitted new brake pads to both front corners and checked the discs with a calliper gauge to confirm they were still within the manufacturer's minimum thickness tolerance before closing everything back up. On the rear, we pressed out the old trailing arm bush and fitted a new one, then checked the surrounding joints while we had access to that part of the suspension. Once both jobs were complete, we put the car back through the full MOT retest. It passed on every point. The owner collected a car with a valid certificate, working brakes and a rear suspension that was doing its job properly again.
If Your Car Is Due an MOT in the Walsall Area, Do Not Leave It Until the Last Minute
MOTs catch things that are not always obvious from the driver's seat, and this job was a clear example of that. If your brake pads are getting low, you may notice the car pulling slightly to one side under braking, or hear a faint metallic scraping when you slow down. A loose suspension bush can sometimes feel like a knock or a vague wobble over uneven road surfaces. Neither of those things means you should wait and see. If something feels different about how your car stops or steers, it is worth having a mechanic look at it. We carry out MOT tests, brake repairs and suspension work across Walsall, Bloxwich, Aldridge, Willenhall and Brownhills. We are transparent about what we find, we explain it in plain terms and we do not carry out work without your agreement first.
