Routine Servicing and Mechanical Repairs Carried Out at Our Walsall Garage

Every week at Platinum Vehicle Services we work through a full range of jobs, from oil changes and interim services right through to more involved mechanical repairs. A lot of what comes through our doors in Walsall is vehicles that have been running with a known issue for longer than they should, or cars that are due a service and the owner wants to know exactly where things stand before spending money. That is the kind of work we take seriously, because getting it right at the right time saves you money and keeps you safe.

A Routine Service That Uncovered More Than the Owner Expected

We had a Ford in recently booked for a full service. The owner had noticed nothing obviously wrong but wanted the car properly checked over. On a full service we do not just swap the oil and filter and send you on your way. We work through the vehicle methodically, checking fluid levels, brake condition, tyre wear, suspension components, lights, and anything else that gives us a picture of where the car actually is. During the brake check we measured the rear pads and found them sitting at around 2mm. The minimum legal limit is 1.6mm, but in practice anything under 3mm is close enough to the line that we would always flag it. At 2mm you have very little stopping distance in reserve, particularly in wet conditions where braking distances increase significantly. Left another month or two of regular driving, the pad material would wear through to the metal backing plate, which then scores directly into the brake disc. A set of rear pads costs a fraction of what rear pads and discs together cost, so catching it here saved the owner a bill roughly two to three times larger down the line.

Why Leaving Worn Brakes Even a Few Weeks Longer Matters

We replaced the rear pads with new parts, bedded them in correctly and road tested the car before it left us. The discs were measured with a calliper and were still within manufacturer tolerance, so they did not need replacing this time. That is the difference between catching something early and leaving it. On the front end we also found a track rod end that had developed noticeable play. The track rod end is the component that connects your steering rack to the wheel, and when it wears, the wheel can move slightly independently of your steering input. At low speed you might not notice much, but at motorway speeds or in an emergency manoeuvre, that play becomes a handling risk. We replaced the worn track rod end and carried out a wheel alignment check on the axle to make sure the steering geometry was correct afterwards. Alignment that is even slightly out will cause your tyres to wear unevenly, costing you tyre replacements sooner than you should need them.

What to Watch for on Your Own Car Before It Becomes a Larger Problem

There are a few things worth paying attention to between services. If your brake pedal feels softer than usual, takes longer to bite, or you hear any grinding or squealing when you slow down, get it looked at promptly. If your car pulls to one side under braking or your steering feels vague at speed, that is worth having checked. A pulling sensation when driving in a straight line often points to alignment or a worn steering component. None of these things fix themselves, and all of them cost more to sort the longer they are left.

At Platinum Vehicle Services in Walsall we carry out this kind of work every day for drivers across Walsall, Bloxwich, Aldridge, Willenhall and Brownhills. Whether you need a full service, an MOT, a brake repair or a diagnostic check, we will tell you clearly what we have found, what it means for your car and what it will cost before we touch anything. You can leave us a message any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 07970901354 and someone from the team will come back to you as soon as possible.
