Mercedes Full Service Completed in Walsall
We had a Mercedes in with us recently at Platinum Vehicle Services for a full service. The owner had kept on top of things fairly well, but the car was due its full check and fluid changes, and there were a few areas that needed attention before they became bigger problems. A full service is not just an oil change and a stamp in the book. Done properly, it is a thorough inspection of the systems that keep the car safe and reliable, and this job was a good example of why it matters.
The Service Covered Every Key System on the Car, Not Just the Obvious Items
We worked through the full service schedule on this Mercedes, which takes in the engine oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs where applicable, all fluid levels including brake fluid, coolant, power steering and screen wash, tyre pressures and tread depth, brake pad and disc condition front and rear, lights, wipers, battery condition and the suspension components. Each of those checks tells us something about the current state of the car. Low brake fluid, for example, can point to worn pads, because as the pads wear down the fluid level in the reservoir drops to compensate. Checking one without the other gives you an incomplete picture.
The Cabin Pollen Filter Was Blocked and Restricting Airflow Into the Car
One of the items on the schedule that often gets overlooked is the cabin pollen filter. This is a panel filter, usually located behind the glovebox or under the bonnet near the base of the windscreen, and its job is to clean the air before it comes through the vents into the passenger compartment. It catches dust, pollen, soot and other particles from the outside air. On this Mercedes the filter was heavily loaded with debris. A filter in that condition does two things. First, it restricts the airflow through the heating and ventilation system, so you get less air out of the vents and the blower has to work harder. Second, anything that gets past a degraded filter goes straight into the air you and your passengers are breathing. For anyone with hay fever, asthma or any kind of respiratory sensitivity, that matters a great deal. We fitted a new cabin pollen filter as part of the service. It is a straightforward replacement but it makes a real difference to the air quality inside the car and restores the ventilation system to how it should perform.
Leaving a Full Service Until the Car Shows a Problem Always Costs More in the End
The reason we recommend sticking to a service schedule is not to generate work for ourselves, it is because catching something small early is nearly always cheaper than dealing with it once it has developed. Engine oil that is left too long past its service interval breaks down and loses its ability to lubricate properly, which causes wear on internal engine components. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and its boiling point drops, which means under heavy braking the fluid can boil in the lines and give you a spongy, unreliable pedal at exactly the moment you need it most. These are not remote possibilities. They are predictable consequences of skipping scheduled maintenance, and the repair bills that follow are considerably higher than the cost of a routine service.
What to Watch For on Your Own Mercedes or Any Other Car
There are a few signs worth watching for between services. If your blower seems weaker than it used to be, or the air from the vents smells musty or stale, a blocked cabin pollen filter is often the cause. If your brake pedal feels softer than usual or sits lower before it bites, get the brake fluid and pads checked. If your oil warning light comes on or you notice the oil level dropping between services, do not leave it. Any of those signs are worth a call to us before the situation gets worse.
