BMW Service Completed at Platinum Vehicle Services in Walsall
We recently completed a full service on a BMW here at Platinum Vehicle Services in Walsall. The owner brought the car in because it was due a service and they wanted to make sure everything was in order before racking up more miles. That is exactly the right approach. A service is not just about changing the oil and ticking a box. It is a structured inspection that tells you what condition the car is actually in, and it gives us the chance to catch anything developing before it becomes a more expensive problem.
The Engine Oil Was Overdue and the Old Fluid Was Already Breaking Down
The first thing we checked was the engine oil. On this BMW the oil had gone well past the point where it was still doing its job properly. Fresh engine oil is a light amber colour and flows freely. What we drained out was dark, thick and carrying contaminants from combustion. Engine oil has one job, to keep metal components moving against each other without grinding together. Once it degrades to that condition it is no longer forming a proper protective film between those surfaces. Left long enough, that means accelerated wear on the bearings, the camshaft and the cylinder walls. Those are not cheap components to replace. We drained the old oil completely, replaced the oil filter, which traps particles that would otherwise circulate through the engine, and filled the engine with fresh oil to the correct level and specification for this BMW model.
Low Coolant and a Cabin Filter That Was No Longer Doing Its Job
We also found the coolant level was low. Coolant, sometimes called antifreeze, is the fluid that circulates around the engine to stop it overheating. If the level drops and is not topped up, the engine temperature rises beyond what it is designed to handle. At that point you are looking at potential damage to the head gasket, which is the seal between the engine block and the cylinder head. A head gasket repair on a BMW can run into several hundred pounds or more, so keeping the coolant at the correct level is a very simple way of protecting against a much larger bill. We topped it up to the correct mark and checked the system for any obvious signs of a leak. We also replaced the cabin air filter. This is the filter that cleans the air coming into the car through your vents and heating system. The one we removed was heavily blocked with dust, pollen and debris. A blocked cabin filter restricts airflow, which means your heating and air conditioning have to work harder, and it means you and your passengers are breathing air that is not being filtered properly.
A Full Check Across the Car Before It Left Our Workshop
Beyond the fluid and filter work, we carried out checks across the brakes, tyres, lights, suspension components and all other fluid levels as part of the service inspection. This is the part of a service that a lot of people do not think about. It is not just maintenance, it is a health check on the whole vehicle. We record what we find and we tell the owner exactly where the car stands, not just what we changed today but what to keep an eye on for next time. That transparency is something we take seriously at Platinum Vehicle Services, because you should always know what has been done to your car and why.
If Your BMW Is Due a Service, Do Not Leave It Any Longer Than You Already Have
BMW engines are well built but they are also precise, and they rely on clean oil, correct fluid levels and functioning filters to stay that way. If your service light has come on, or if you are not sure when your car was last serviced, that is reason enough to bring it in. The signs to watch for on your own car are an oil warning light, a temperature gauge climbing higher than normal, reduced airflow from your vents or a noticeable drop in how the engine sounds or responds. None of those things resolve on their own. We cover BMW servicing as well as Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford and a wide range of other vehicles, and we are based here in Walsall serving drivers from across the area including Bloxwich, Aldridge, Willenhall and Brownhills.
